To enhance coastal security by giving more infrastructure It has a bullet-proof cabin
PUDUKOTTAI: With a view to enhancing the coastal security by providing additional infrastructure, the Marine Police Station at Tiruppunavasal in the district has been sanctioned an interceptor boat. This is the first of the four interceptor boats to be provided for the four marine police stations falling under the Pattukottai Zone of the Coastal Security Group. The other stations in Manamelkudi, Sedubavachathiram and Adhiramapattinam would get similar interceptor boats in course of time. The five-tonne, 16-seater boat has two engines, each of 275 Horse-power capacity, and has a bullet-proof cabin. It has a number of safety gadgets, including 20 life jackets and two lifebuoys. The boat can travel at a speed of 40 nautical miles per hour. Imported enginesThe engines and other components have been imported from Greece and assembled at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited in Kolkata. The cost of the boat is Rs.1.05 crore. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Coastal Security Group, Pattukottai, S. Amsavalli, who inspected the boat at Kottaipattinam, told The Hindu that a special team had been constituted for conducting the patrolling daily for eight hours in the sea from Enathi to Kottaipattinamvillages falling under the jurisdiction of the Tiruppunavasal Marine Police station. A specially trained technical sub-inspector and a head constable would accompany the patrolling personnel for offering guidance.
