Vibha Seeds to expand its gene bank

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Heralding germplasm as the next revolution in agricultural technologies, P. Vidyasagar, Chairman and Managing Director, Vibha Seeds, said the company’s research was geared to expanding their gene bank.

Germplasm is the basic genetic material within a plant which gives rise to certain traits. Depending on the favourability of these traits, the germplasm is stored in a gene bank either in its naturally occurring form or in an ‘improved’ form after hybridization. Such genetic pools then become the source of hybrid crop varieties. “Right now our major focus is to collect and improve our germplasm count,” Mr. Vidyasagar told mediapersons here on Tuesday. “Biotechnology solutions must account for 80 per cent of increased food productivity by 2030.
