GMC recognised as regional centre for FDP

HYDERABAD: Medical Council of India (MCI) has recognised Gandhi Medical College (GMC) as the regional centre to take up Faculty Development Programme (FDP), the first such centre in State. The college is also expected to get the much-awaited MCI recognition for its super- speciality seat in urology from the coming academic year.

The medical education cell of the college will be conducting the FDP, which essentially consists of special workshops, classes and training sessions on ways to improve the teaching methodology of the faculty. Teachers from all the government medical colleges in South India would be trained at the medical education cell.

“Technology has changed the way we teach. A blackboard is not enough in a classroom and teachers have to constantly upgrade their knowledge and teaching skills. Top CEOs, scientists and researchers from other sectors will be invited to interact with medical college faculty and deliver lectures,” said GMC Principal Pradeep Deshpande.

The medical college already has 10 super-speciality seats in nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology and plastic surgery. In addition to these disciplines, the hospital will now have an MCI recognised super-speciality course in urology. Only Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, and Osmania General Hospital have similar super-speciality seats in the State.

MCI team visit

The medical college authorities said that the MCI inspection team visited the medical college on December 9 to check the infrastructure facilities in the Urology Department and the medical education cell. The cell was recently upgraded by setting up an e-library, which provides access to over 1,000 medical textbooks and scores of science journals to the students.

In all, the medical college has 50 professors and associate professors and 250 assistant professors.

“The students will benefit largely from the MCI recognition. The recognition will help us to upgrade the teaching skills of the faculty,” Dr. Deshpande added.
