Chief Minister’s Choice: The Chief Minister is the latest to adopt an animal from Mysore zoo. MYSORE: Animal adoption in Mysore zoo received a major boost with Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa renewing the adoption of a tigress by remitting Rs. 90,000 towards its maintenance for one year. The tigress, Amulya, was adopted last year by the Chief Minister and this was said to be the first tiger adoption case ever since animal adoption programme was launched by the Mysore zoo in 2001-02. The renewal period is from October 10, 2009 to October 10, 2010 and the Mysore zoo has been appreciative of the Chief Minister for his interest and concern towards the welfare of the tigress and his support for conservation efforts, said Vijay Ranjan Singh, Executive Director of the zoo. He said the Chief Minister’s initial gesture in 2008 triggered similar interest towards tiger adoption among others. As a result, four other tigers had been adopted since then, and B.K.S. Iyengar, yoga exponent, adopted Brahma and Anasuya, Udaya Kumar Singh of Kumar Organic Products, Bangalore, adopted Manya, Banoo Bramji adopted Reetha and Harnamdas Trust of Bangalore adopted Agasthya. In December 2008, K.T. Kariappa of Mysore adopted an elephant and this triggered similar adoption spree and January 2009, two elephants were adopted by Vedavalli of Bangalore. The animal adoption programme is a novel method of raising funds wherein people who adopt a particular animal will pay the money required to feed the animal during the adoption period. In return for their gesture, individuals will have a feeling of being actively involved in conservation and there are other benefits like free entrance to the zoo, access to the zoo library etc while the name of the donor would be displayed in front of the enclosure in which the adopted animal is housed. The zoo raised more than Rs. 35 lakh by way of adoption fee during 2008-09 and hopes to best the figures during the current financial year.
