Kavitha, Joint Commissioner, HR&CE, handing over the Maragatha Lingam to the temple priest at Thirukaravasal near Tiruvarur on Wednesday.
TIRUVARUR: Maragatha Lingam, which was stolen from the Thyagarajaswamy temple at Thirukaravasal near here in 1992 and recovered by the police recently, was handed over to temple authorities by the idol wing police on Wednesday. S. Selvaraj, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Idol wing, and Inspectors I. Khader Batcha and N. Jeevanandam handed over the idol to Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment officials.
The lingam was taken in a procession to the temple and villagers welcomed it.
According to Mr. Selvaraj, After G. Thilakavathy became the Additional Director General of Police, Idol wing, a special team was formed to investigate the case.
On receiving a tip-off that a person had tried to sell the lingam in the Villupuram area, the team rushed there and recovered it. Later the police verified with archakas of the temple and others and confirmed that it was the same lingam. The HR and CE officials said pujas for the lingam would start on an auspicious day. Until then the lingam would be kept safe in the temple.
