Cultural shows to ring in New Year

Celebrations will begin with the inauguration of a consumer expo.


KOCHI: The district administration has teamed up with the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to enthral the city folks with a cultural extravaganza in the days leading up to the New Year.

Winter Splashes 2009, the annual Christmas and New Year celebrations organised by the district administration in association with the Kerala Tourism Department and DTPC, will get off to a start with the inauguration of an international consumer exhibition, organised by the India International Consumer Fair, by Fisheries Minister S. Sarma at Marine Drive on Thursday at 9.30 a.m. Dominic Presentation, MLA, and P. Rajeev, MP, will also be present.

The fair arranged on a fully air-conditioned space of 45,000 sq.ft will feature 250 stalls of all major brands dealing in products ranging from consumer durables, home appliances, IT products, furniture, real estate, health care, cosmetics and textiles. Entry for those aged above five will be by ticket. Besides, another 5,000 sq.ft had been dedicated to food courts.

Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate the cultural programmes at Durbar Hall ground on December 28 at 5.30 p.m. Since then, a variety of cultural programmes will be hosted at the ground and Marine Drive in the evenings till January 3.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma and Transport Minister Jose Thettayil will be present. Mayor Mercy Williams will be the chief guest.

The inaugural function will be followed by a dance adaptation of Vallathol’s poem “Shiyanum Makanum” by Kerala Kalamandalam at Durbar Hall at 7 p.m.

Hindustani classical music by Pandit Ramesh Narayanan will be held the next day at 7 p.m. Kuchipudi dance performance by Sree Lakshmi and a mega classic fusion by Nandanam Symphony, Kochi, will be held at Marine Drive on the same day.

A musical night by maestro Balamuralikrishna and playback singer K.S. Chitra will be held at Durbar Hall on December 30.

A Bharatanatyam performance by Vani Ganapathy will be staged at Marine Drive on the same day.

On the New Year eve, artists Tini Tom, Bijukuttan, Shaju and team will put up a comedy show at Marine Drive. A similar show by Manoj Guinness and party will be held at Durbar Hall on the same evening.
