Marad: 3 get jail term

KOZHIKODE: The Special Additional District Sessions Court (Marad cases) here on Thursday sentenced three persons to five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.18,000 each in connection with the case of setting ablaze a house during the communal riots at the seaside village of Marad eight years ago.

Pronouncing the judgment, Special court judge K.P. Prasannakumari found Sanadanan, Babu and Prasanth guilty for setting on fire the house of Parichandakathu Ramla on January 3, 2002. The accused had caused a damage over Rs.2 lakh, according to the prosecution.

The accused were found guilty under Section 153-A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence and language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony); Section 436 (mischief by fire or explosives with intent to destroy house; Section 450 ( house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment for life); Section 143 ( unlawful assembly); Section 147 (rioting) and 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapons) of the Indian Penal Code.

If they failed to remit the fine they will have to undergo nine more months in prison.

Acquitted

The court acquitted the fourth and fifth accused, Sujith and Anandan, respectively in the case.

This is the 15th of the 67 cases registered in connection with the incidents including the five murders on the Marad beach on January 3 and 4.
