Special Correspondent

RESTRAINED:The police block protesting All India Students’ Federation activists from entering the university campus at Mangattuparamba in Kannur on Thursday.

KANNUR: Protests by students’ organisations on the Kannur University campus at Mangattuparamba on Thursday after a few answer sheets of degree examinations were found abandoned on the campus turned violent.

The police caned Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists who took out a march to the university campus. The protesting KSU workers led by KSU State vice-president Rigil Makutty reached the university campus in a procession and tried to enter the campus when the police personnel stopped them at the gate. The police used lathis to disperse the protestors. Nearly 10 KSU workers, including Mr.Makutty, were injured in the caning. The injured were admitted to a hospital at Kannapuram. Earlier, Students Federation of India (SFI) workers laid siege to the university in protest against the answer sheets issue. They did not allow the university staff to enter the campus, barring Vice-Chancellor P.K. Michael Tharakan and Pro Vice-Chancellor A.P Kuttykrishnan.

The police arrested and removed some SFI workers who entered the office and shouted slogans.

Workers of the All India Students Federation, Muslim Students Federation and the Students Islamic Organisation also staged separate protests on the campus.

The police had a tough time controlling some of the protestors who tried to barge in to the university office. The university’s functioning was paralysed by the protests.

Three evaluated answer sheets of the first semester B.Sc and B.Com examinations were found outside the university office on the Mangattuparamba campus.

Prof. Tharakan convened a meeting of students union leaders to discuss the issue. University statutory officers and Syndicate members also attended the meeting.
