Anthrax case detected in Orissa

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Following the death of a 35-year-old man at Dabuguda under Gumma Panchayat in Malkangiri mandal of Orissa, near border with Visakhapatnam district, due to cutaneous anthrax a team from the District Medical and Health Officer’s office here has gone to the village to take up surveillance and to treat patients if there are any.

Initial reports said the village was in AP and a team was sent. However, another team found a man with anthrax symptoms at a shandy at Onakadilli in Orissa and through him confirmed that Dabuguda was in Orissa. The team started treatment and took samples.

This patient informed that four to five persons were also showing anthrax symptoms in the village. The first team which was expected to return here on Friday was told to treat the patients and bring them to the nearest PHC in AP side for treatment if they were willing to come, DMHO J. Sarojini said on Thursday.

Collector of Visakhapatnam was informed of the anthrax case on the Orissa side of the border and he would inform the Malkangiri Collector of the same as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of anthrax to the AP side. The DMHO of Visakhapatnam was informing the AP Director of Health to pass on the information to the Orissa Director of Health.

Diarrhoea cases at Anakapalle

Dr. Sarojini said some diarrhoea cases were detected at Anakapalle and a few surrounding villages when she had gone there on Thursday following reports of deaths due to diarrhoea. Leakages in pipelines and unclean water could be the reasons for diarrhoea, she said. However, she said the deaths reported were not due to diarrhoea.

The two women who died were very old and the two-and-a-half-year old girl was having spleen abdomen.

Dr. Sarojini said the Anakapalle Municipal Health Officer and other staff, Water Works Engineer were told to stop leakages in water pipes and ensure supply of safe drinking water.
