MYSORE: A web-based programme titled Online Hearing Screening (checkhearing.nic.in) received the Manthan Award South Asia 2009, in the category E-Inclusion. The programme is a product of a research project completed in 2005-06 by All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) director Vijayalakshmi Basavaraj (then deputy director technical of Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Handicapped, Mumbai) as the principal investigator, institute mass media officer P.J. Mathew Martin and reader and head of the department of Audiology Rajeev Jalvi as co-investigators. “This web-based programme is one of a kind, which facilitates screening for hearing of any age group and provides information on the places where facilities are available for further diagnosis and intervention,” a press release from AIISH said. The Manthan Award was presented at a ceremony held on December 19 at the National Cooperative Union Institute, New Delhi. The award is instituted by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and Nokia Siemens Networks, said Dr. Basavaraj. The other nominees for the Manthan Award 2009 South Asia were from counties such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
