Film appreciation workshop from today

MANGALORE: The Sahamata Film Society is organising a free two-day film appreciation workshop at the Sahodaya Hall in Balmatta here from Saturday.

Documentary filmmaker G. Parameshwara will be the main resource person at the workshop that will feature discussions on some of the most significant Indian and foreign films of all times.

The films scheduled to be viewed and analysed are: Vittorio De Sica’s The Bicycle Thief; Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali; Girish Kasarvalli’s Tabaranakathe; Ritwik Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara; Akira Kurosawa’s The Throne of Blood; Roman Polanski’s Tragedy of Macbeth; Ingmar Bergman’s Seventh Seal; Gurudutt’s Pyasa; and Pattabhirama Reddy’s Samskara.

Secretary of the film society Ivan D’Silva told The Hindu that the main objective of the workshop was to create a platform for creative and intellectual dialogue in the region. He said the society, which is an association of 11 academicians, film enthusiasts and progressive thinkers, aimed at bridging the growing divide in coastal Karnataka through cultural initiatives.

Mr. D’Silva said that the group came together around two years ago against the backdrop of the growing sectarian violence in the region. “We came together with the understanding that creating awareness and an intellectually vibrant platform will go a long way in furthering the cause of communal amity,” he said.
