‘3 Idiots’ set to pack a punch Film Review

December is turning out to be the best cinematic month of the year. ‘Rocket’ may have failed to set the box office on fire but Rajkumar Hirani’s ‘3 Idiots’ are definitely going to laugh all the way to the hearts.

Hirani carries the humanist tone of Munnabhai series, picks the methodical Aamir Khan of ‘Taare Zameen Par’ along the way to pack the coolest punch of the year. It is one of those rare films, where hype doesn’t kill the novelty factor. We don’t know how they do it but once again Hirani and Abhijat Joshi have been able to drill their way into the heart of even the most circumspect.

Hirani has given to what could have been an anecdotal film on campus life, the layering of a thriller.

In what could have been a lecture on education system, he has imbued the soul of a satire. Even the backgrounds make a statement here.

Watch out for the scene in Shimla, where a photographer is taking pictures of some burqa-covered women in the background!

On the surface, two friends are in search of their mate who taught them not to chase success but aspire for excellence.

However, when they learnt their lesson, he himself disappeared.

Ranchhoddas or Rancho (Aamir Khan) is not too different from the teacher of ‘Taare Zameen Par’ except that it is the tale of the days when he was an engineering student at the country’s premier engineering institute. He inspires to dream.

He tells his mates to follow their heart and when something makes the heart skip a beat soothe it with a mantra called ‘all izz well’.

He is up against the physical manifestation of all that is wrong with our education system. Viru Sahastrabudhe (Boman Irani) is indeed the virus that sniffs the fun element out of education and makes life in campus a race against failure. A pressure cooker, as Rancho puts it. Perhaps that’s why Nobel Prize winners are born in this country but by the time they accept the award they are nationals of another country.

Hirani has touched the raw nerve of an entire generation while tickling the funny bone.

Many of us have missed the bus because some elder held us back to take the trodden path. Hirani has handled his puppets deftly.
