Plan to sell textiles worth Rs. 25 lakh at exhibition

KARUR: There are plans to sell textiles worth Rs. 25 lakh during the ongoing handloom exhibition in Karur, according to Collector J. Uma Maheswari.

Speaking after inaugurating the exhibition here on Friday, Dr. Uma Maheswari said that saris and other handloom materials from various weavers’ cooperative societies from Erode, Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Namakkal, Madurai, Dindigul, Salem, Tirunelveli and Vellore districts were on display.

The varieties and items on show included Kora Cotton, ornamental spreads, jacquard and plain bedspreads, saris, shirt bits carpet and other textiles. There was a rebate of 30 per cent allowed by the State Government on select items, she said.

Union Ministry of Textiles as well as the State Department of Handlooms and Textiles exhibition were jointly conducting the exhibition, which would go on till January 7 next. The exhibition was coinciding with Pongal festival and the Handloom Week.

She said that there were 48 handloom weavers’ cooperative societies functioning in Karur division in which over 8,100 looms have been listed.

Assistant Director of handloom and Textiles T.K. Ekambaram, Tahsildar Dharmaraj, and former DMK district secretary Paramathi A. Shanmugamparticipated.
