THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cut in Central quota will not affect the distribution of rice and wheat for the APL ration card-holders in the State. The office of the Food and Civil Supplies Minister said in a release here on Saturday that the APL card-holders were eligible for 35 kg grain. But now only 10 kg rice was being given at Rs.8.90 a kg and 2 kg wheat at Rs.6.70 a kg a month. They were also eligible for 10 kg of rice at Rs.14.70 a kg and 5 kg of wheat at Rs.11.60 a kg. The Centre had earlier allocated 1,13,000 tonnes of rice for this category but later slashed about 85 per cent of the allotment. In addition, there was an ad hoc allocation of 19,000 tonnes. The special allotment of 35,000 tonnes of rice for Onam was provided at a higher price of Rs.14.70 a kg. The card-holders were eligible for the rice and wheat at subsidised prices and also the additional quota too. Stringent action would be taken against the ration dealers who refused to give the grain at reduced price to the card-holders, the release said. The distribution of 25 kg grains for Rs.2 per kg for the BPL card-holders also was continuing without any hitch, the release said.
