CHENNAI: A room built with Rs.5 lakh donated by Freemasons of India at the annexe building of Sankara Nethralaya in Nungambakkam was inaugurated on Saturday.
The room is on the second floor, said V. Vaidyanathan, honorary chairman of Sankara Nethralaya.
The funds were donated under the Millennium Group of Lodges charity project.
Captain Balaram Biswakumar, Grand Master of Grand Lodge of India, who handed over the cheque to S.S. Badrinath, chairman emeritus of the Sankara Nethralaya, said the Freemasons contributed to various causes and the charity was given to institutions after ensuring that the money was used for specific purposes.
“We are cautious about to whom the money goes,” Dr. Biswakumar said.
He said the organisation had helped build Rs.1.5 crore worth houses for the tsunami-affected in Kanyakumari.
The organisation is associated with a host of activities in various parts of the country, he said.
