CHENNAI: The 29th Natya Kala Conference of the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha was opened on Saturday, with Jayant Kastuar, secretary, Sangeet Natak Akademi declaring that dance was a medium of liberation.

“Dance allows you to express yourself through the body you otherwise will not be allowed to do. It liberates you and even allow you to go beyond your body,” he said.

Convener of the conference Ananda Shankar Jayant speaking on the topic “Dance matters” said dance with all its multi-hued presence had become a way of life.

The dancer, diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, said she continued to dance even as she was undergoing treatment, surgery, chemo and radiation therapies.

“By bringing a laser sharp focus to my dance in its multifaceted glory, I successfully turned out of cancer and tuned into my dance. My dance saved me from myself,” she added.
