THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: To tackle price rise in the State and to ensure financial security for non-resident Keralites who come back home for good, the Pravasi Malayali Welfare Association will set up a chain of supermarkets at a cost of Rs.500 crore. A press note issued here said the ‘Matha Mantralaya’ supermarket scheme was announced at the State conference of the association held here recently. The scheme would generate employment for thousands of people and would help hold the price line not only in Kerala but also in neighbouring States. Plea to governmentsIn his inaugural address at a public meeting organised in connection with the conference, Ramesh Chennithala, president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, said the Union government should take immediate steps to tackle the problems, including loss of jobs, faced by non-resident Keralites on account of cancellation of flights by Air India. Both the Union and the State governments should put in place more welfare schemes for non-resident Keralites, he added. Vellayani Sreekumar, president of the association, and Christopher Vincent, general secretary, were among those present on the occasion, the press note added.
