Rosaiah for action plan to prevent accidents

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister K. Rosaiah has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive action plan to prevent road accidents in the State.

“There is a steady increase in road accidents leading to death of innocents, which is a cause for grave concern and pain. To put an end to it, coordinated efforts by all transport, police and others by working in tandem is the effective way of tackling the menace,” Mr. Rosaiah said during an interaction with officials ahead of the 21st Road Safety Week beginning January 1.

Daily feature

He said road accidents had become a daily feature and immediate steps were needed to prevent them and also ease traffic congestion by effective implementation of rules. He said the existing rules were not enough but a concerted public awareness campaign and support of people would go a long way in controlling accidents. Mr. Rosaiah insisted that drivers should be encouraged to wear seat belts, avoid drunken driving and prevent use of cell phones while driving. He asked the Health Department officials to identify more hospitals that could provide traumatic care in addition to the 108 ambulance service. The total number of vehicles in the State is 85 lakh of which 80% are two-wheelers. Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Raymond Peter, explained to the Chief Minister that active enforcement was being done by the police and transport departments.
