ADILABAD: Adilabad MLA Jogu Ramanna (TDP) said he would have escaped the attention of the mob at Osmania University (OU) had he not worn khadi. He was one of the legislators led by Nagam Janardhan Reddy, his party’s deputy floor leader in the Assembly to have been thrashed at the OU campus on December 24.

Mr. Ramanna arrived here on Sunday after being discharged from NIMS, Hyderabad where he underwent treatment for an injury on the spine and a few bruises on his body. He spoke to The Hindu at his residence about the nightmarish incident.

Stones hurled

“Having initially been received by the crowd rather cordially, we were taken aback when “go back” slogans were raised. Soon chappals and stones were hurled at us . I tried to give the agitators a slip. However, they recognised me as one of the targets because of my khadi clothes. (Khadi debbalu tinpichindi, was how he put it). Nagesh (Boath MLA) managed to disappear into the crowd as he was wearing casuals instead of khadi,” recalled the legislator, those agonising moments amid thousands of agitated students.

Showing mostly the internal injuries that he received, the MLA said he was hit by a stone on his spine. He was also beaten up by wooden sticks and staffs that resulted in painful bruises on his body.

Vehicle damaged

“My vehicle was smashed by large sized stones by students or whoever the culprits were.

They just did not care that I was sitting inside the vehicle trying to escape,” he said about the students going berserk during the incident.

After being subjected to terror for about 20 minutes, a student from Adilabad recognised the MLA and dared to take him to safety.

“I am indebted to Naresh Jadhav who said he was student and along with one of his friends took me to safety on a motorcycle,” he expressed gratitude towards the student.
