Free Veda classes to be held

TIRUCHI: The Samskrita Sahitya Parishad here which has been conducting free Sanskrit classes and sloka classes on Sundays has proposed to conduct free Veda classes in the near future, according to S. Ravindran, president of the parishad.

Addressing a function here on Sunday after honouring Sanskrit scholar S. Jagadisan, former Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Madura College in Madurai, with the title of ‘Geervana Vani Prachara Durandara’ (Person who got the Blessings of Goddess Saraswathi) at the anniversary celebration of the parishad, founded in 1936, Mr. Ravindran said that the parishad was able to carry on its function of teaching Sanskrit with theassistance provided by the Rashtriya Samskrit Samsthan, New Delhi.

Vidwat Sadas are being held on one Sunday every month under the presidentship of Sanskrit scholar ‘Bhashyamani’ A.Sivaramakrishna Sastrigal on the premises of National College Higher Secondary School.

N. Veezhinathan, former Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit of Madras University, presided.

S. Krishnamoorthy, secretary, said that a month-long Sanskrit classes were conducted during the summer vacation.

V.N.Balakrishna Sarma, vice-president of the parishad, K.V.Balakrishnan, Sanskrit scholars A.Subramania Sarma, A.Sivaramakrishna Sastrial and others spoke.

Earlier, in the Vidwat Sadas held in the morning, Sanskrit scholars V.M.Ananthanarayana, Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, National College, Tiruchi, R.Thirunarayanan, Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, St.Joseph ’ s College, Tiruchi, V.S.Vishnu Potty, Professor and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, SCSVMV University, Kancheepuram, S.Padmanabhan, Professor, Sanskrit Department, University of Madras, and others spoke at the Sadas on various subjects.

Dr Jagadisan who received the title, thanked the parishad and said that it had been rendering yeoman service for the development of the language.
