Stalin releases book of poems on “loneliness of metro life”

CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday released ‘Manjanathi,’ a poetry book of Thamizhachi Thangapandian. The first copy was received by the author’s mother Rajamani Thangapandian.

Brought out by Uyirmai Publishers, the book is a compilation of 70 poems in 120 pages.

The poems have been grouped into four sections — Iruthalum Iruthal Nimithamum, Paalai Kali, Mazhai Kavidhaigal, Veyyil Rusi — all portraying the painstaking life of village womanhood surviving the heat, dryness and rains of life. Some of the poems depict the cruelty of war and its victims.

As part of the release function, Ms. Thamizhachi Thangapandian’s journey in poetry was depicted in visuals, poetic portrayal and theatrical presentations. Her poems were published in renowned magazines over a period of two years.

According to the author, the book has acquired its name from ‘Manjanathi’ tree — belonging and symbol of infertile village lands ‘Karisal’ — which has been personified as women of such villages. The poem spins around the mythical deities, flowers, waterbodies that represent village life and its women folk.

In his address, Mr. Stalin said that it was the third poetry collection of Ms. Thamizhachi Thangapandian.

The first two collections — Enchottu Penn and Vanapaechi — have fetched several awards for her.

After having a glance, Mr. Stalin said that he was inspired by some of the poems in the present edition such as Kural, Pattanathu Kadal and Manjanathi Maram.

“These poems have brought out the individuality of the author and rake up old memories. These poems are not a mere decoration of words, it brings out her feelings and that of a woman in society.”

In her acceptance speech, Ms. Thamizhachi Thangapandian said: “In the journey of my poetry, Manjanathi is yet another record that exposes my anguish and loneliness of metro life.”

The book is priced at Rs.190.
