New Delhi: India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was presented with the Reliance Mobile ICC Test Championship mace by ICC Chief Excecutive Haroon Lorgat on Sunday night. The mace was presented to mark India’s ascent to the No. 1 ranking in Tests.

India had achieved the top ranking after claiming a 2-0 win over Sri Lanka in the Test series last month. Virender Sehwag was also present on the occasion.

Dhoni praised his team’s efforts, and acknowledged that it had been a long journey to reach the top. “It has not been an overnight achievement. A lot of work has gone into this, and we’ve played some very good cricket.

Praising one and all

“It has been a complete team effort. Full credit to the fast bowlers, batsmen and everyone. We should also not forget the role played by the senior cricketers in inspiring us.”

Dhoni also assured the gathering that India would play more then just the four scheduled Tests next year.

Sehwag described the experience of being part of a team that had so much support.

“It has been wonderful, and we’ve received great support from all our fans. We promise to stay on top of the rankings for as long as we can.”

Sehwag praised Dhoni’s leadership in taking the team to the top. Dhoni, on his part, said Sehwag was a “special talent no one could match up to.”

Mr. Lorgat paid tribute to the efforts that India had taken to surpass South Africa.

“Getting to No. 1 is no mean achievement. Each player, past and present, has played a role in this achievement.

“What will be really exciting is when India takes on South Africa in February.

“It will give us a chance to see the No. 1 side battling the No. 2 side,” he said.
