Restrictions: Crowds at public places such as the Marina Beach will be closely monitored on the New Year eve as the police have decided to come down heavily on drunk driving. People seen on the beach on Sunday. CHENNAI: Restrictions on serving of liquor and driving speed will be in force from December 30, a day ahead of the New Year eve. Elaborate arrangements have been made in the city as part of the city police’s efforts to prevent drunk driving and accidents. Accident-freeAdditional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Shakeel Akhter said that this year the focus was on making the New Year accident-free. “Every year, the police have to contend with fatal and non-fatal accidents. Police enforcement of traffic will begin on Wednesday and barricades would be put up in various places to restrict speed. Vehicle checks will be taken up and cases booked as per legal provisions against those found violating speed restrictions,” he said. While there will be no change in the time the last drink will be served in bars and pubs across the city, a few hotels confirmed that they have been allowed to keep their restaurants and pubs open for a couple of hours longer than the normal closing time. Limits of decency“We have chosen certain places to spread awareness messages. More attention would be given to Kamarajar Salai along the Marina Beach and East Coast Road,” Mr. Akhter said. Merry-making to usher in the New Year should not cross limits of decency or violate laws. “We are going to be ruthless against offenders,” he said. Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran is expected to give instructions on similar lines on Wednesday. He told The Hindu that the focus during the New Year eve celebration would be on preventing drunk driving.
