‘N-energy plays key role in tackling climate change’

VISAKHAPATNAM: Terming energy security and climate change as the greatest challenges, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India R. Chidambaram on Monday said nuclear energy played an important role in tackling these challenges.

Inaugurating an international symposium on ‘Role of Chemical Engineers in Pharma Industry’ and ‘Shri Dhirubai Ambani Commemoration Day’ conducted under the aegis of Reliance Industries, IIChE Waltair regional centre and Department of Chemical Engineering, Andhra University, here, he observed ‘for India to become a ‘developed’ country, the per capita consumption of energy should increase manifold (six to eight times) and hundred percent literacy should be achieved.

“ To tackle environmental issues through the use of science and technology, we need both Research & Development and Innovation. Research, which involved generation of new knowledge, gave a country prestige and innovation. Prestige without prosperity is hollow and meaningless and we need both,” Dr. Chidamabaram said. He exhorted young scientists to work on problems important to science and society.

Recalling the amazing business acumen of Dhirubahi Ambani, which showed how one could utilise the great opportunities that India provided, he wanted India to play a more pro-active role to orient human resources development in the direction of its needs. Technology choices would have to be made with fore sight and would have to be backed by research development, innovation and human resources development. Government and industry should work together.

Susil Kumar, president of India Institute of Chemical Engineers, presided. Explaining the importance of Shri Dhirubai Ambani Commemoration Day, G.D.Yadav, Chairman, said Ambani was responsible for converting India into a global power in chemical industry. Vice-Chancellor of Andhra Univeristy Beela Satyanarayana asserted that Andhra University had excellent faculty in chemical engineering department and had good rapport with industry. It was being considered for IIT status, he said. Reading from a paper sent by Reliance Executive Director Nikhil Meswani, Reliance senior executive vice president C. Papa Rao said India was a fastest growing economy and was on its way to becoming industrial power. Climate change was a daunting challenge for chemical industry and chemical engineers play an important role in controlling global warming. Later, Shri Dhirubai Ambani Oration Award was conferred on Dr. Chidambaram.
