KUMBAKONAM: Indian scientists have contributed significantly for the development of India said M. Vijayan, Distinguished Biotechnology Research Professor, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and president, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi at Kumbakonam on Tuesday.

Inaugurating the international conference on ‘Number Theory and Mock Theta Function’ at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University at Kumbakonam, Prof. Vijayan said that green revolution was one example for the contribution made by Indian scientists to India.

It was a collaborative work involving scientists, politicians and farmers. Prof. Vijayan said that science and technology flourished during the period of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

He had a good rapport with scientists like Homi Bhabha, Bhatnagar and others. But later there was a lull in the work. Now India is taken seriously by other countries. He pointed out the importance given to India during the Copenhagen summit. Prof. Vijayan said that there a should be a change in education system of the country.

He said that education should be multidisciplinary in nature. Next he pointed out bureaucracy as a hurdle in India.

Many old institutions known for their excellence now remain neglected because of the bureaucratic attitude.

Prof. Vijayan presented the SASTRA-Ramanujan Award 2009 to Prof. Kathrin Bringmann, University of Cologne, Germany for her outstanding work on modular forms and mock theta functions. Prof. Krishnaswami Alladi, Department of Mathematics, University of Florida and Chairman of SASTRA-Ramanujan Award Committee, read the citation.

R.Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA University and S. Swaminathan, Dean and Director, Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials participated.
