Muziris heritage circuit to be opened before Onam

Thrissur: Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac has said that the Muziris heritage circuit will be thrown open to the tourists before next Onam.

Addressing a workshop on Muziris project here on Monday, the Minister said that a road-canal development project, costing Rs.17 crore, would be implemented in the first phase. “Tender procedures have been started for the road works, which is estimated to cost Rs.7 crore. In all, 22 boat jetties will be constructed under the Rs.10-crore canal renovation project. Side walls of the jetties will be strengthened and canals will be cleaned,” he said.

Vehicles of tourists will not be allowed into the heritage circuit. Eco-friendly village boat services will be operated from common parking facilities at Kodungalloor and Paravur to major heritage spots. Preparations are progressing as per a time-bound work plan, said Mr. Isaac. The workshop was conducted to finalise the articles to be exhibited in the museums to be set up as part of the project.

“Research panels have already shortlisted the historical, political and social events; artefacts; paintings; and documents to be displayed at the museums. A core committee will finalise the list,” Mr. Isaac said.

A design workshop will be held in January to make a plan about how to display the items. A 120-member selected team from various panchayats and municipality under the project will collect the heritage items. Education Minister M.A. Baby said that the Muziris heritage project, which would showcase the life and times of the ancient port town, would be an educational experience for the new generation. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Fisheries Minister S. Sarma also participated in the workshop.
