Service-on-call scheme launched

Kozhikode: The Swabhiman service-on-call scheme to provide households with access to skilled labour was launched jointly by Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and Housing Minister Benoy Viswom here on Friday.

The Swabhiman project has a call centre at the Collectorate. Consumers can either phone in their service request, SMS or log on to the Swabhiman website ( www.swabhiman.gov.in) to call for a skilled worker. Service is available for coconut climbing, electrical work, plumbing, electronic goods repair, refrigerator and air condition maintenance, gas stove repair and carpentry. Till date 140 workers have taken training and registered with Swabhiman in the first phase.

The project, which is the brainchild of District Collector P.B. Salim, is an attempt to mitigate the skilled labour shortage in the city. The service will be made available within an hour of receiving the request.

Dr. Salim said the project had begun in right earnest with the maximum number of skilled personnel having registered with Swabhiman being coconut climbers, a trade which city-dwellers complain had the fewest practitioners.

The call centre number is 0495-2372666. The customer service representative will log the caller’s request including address on the Swabhiman website and identify the skilled personnel, closest to the caller’s location. The customer service representative will then call the skilled worker to ensure his availability, and then send a confirmation SMS to the customer with the caller’s name and a registration number.

Consumers can send an SMS to 9446460600 as follows: SR<space>Service Code<space>Location. The service codes are as follows: Coconut Climber (CO), Plumber (PL), Electrician (EL), AC & Refrigeration (RA), Electronics (EX), Carpentry (CA) and Gas Stove Repair (GS).

Customers can also request through the Swambhiman website by filling details like name, panchayat/corporation name, exact location, request type and phone number. The customer service representative will then call back to confirm the customer’s identity.

The rates for all services except coconut climbing is Rs.100 for house visit and Rs.50 for travel expense. Coconut climbers should be paid Rs.10 a tree with minimum wage of Rs.100 for a house visit.
