Award for founder of micro-credit forum

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Community Service Award will be presented to Dr. Prabhakar, the founder and chief executive of Society for Rural Improvement (SRI), at a function in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The Community Service Award was conferred on him for his “dedication to the Indian community and service to the under-privileged and commitment to their issues and efforts to help them.”

Dr. Prabhakar left a job in the US and returned to his native village of Kollengode in Palakkad to serve poor rural women. For 13 years, he has been engaged in poverty alleviation schemes by replicating the Grameen Banking System of Bangladesh with relevant modifications.

SRI provides collateral-free micro-credit for economically viable and environmentally sustainable income generating activities.
