THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday sanctioned Rs.1 lakh each to the families of the victims of the LPG tanker lorry accident at Karunagapally and Rs.50,000 each to those injured. The amount will be paid out of the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. The Prime Minister took this step on the basis of a memorandum submitted by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy and Alapuzha MP K.C. Venugopal at the Raj Bhavan. Announcing this at the Samskara Sahiti award function here, Mr. Chennithala said the Prime Minister took the decision on extending financial assistance within 15 minutes and thanked him for his gesture. Later in a statement here, Mr. Venugopal said the memorandum had also urged the Prime Minister to give direction to the Indian Oil Corporation to extend financial assistance to those who had suffered losses to property. The delegation pointed out that the Indian Oil Corporation’s stand that it cannot provide assistance in such accidents did not go well with the profile of a public sector undertaking. Rescue unit
The delegation urged the Prime Minister to give directions for setting up an emergency rescue unit with all modern facilities located in Kochi.
