GUWAHATI: Abhra Mondal made three successive saves to help East Bengal beat local favourite Shillong Lajong FC 3-0 via tie-breaker in the final of the Federation Cup football at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Sunday. The win saw East Bengal lifting the title for the sixth time while ensuring a berth in the continental club championship — AFC Cup. Lajong FC held off the challenge of East Bengal keeping the scoreline blank in the regulation and extra time. The script got changed in the tie-breaker where Lajong drew a naught with all its attempts from Anil Gurung, Samson Ramengmawia and Kyrshan Lyngshing saved by Mondal. East Bengal struck thrice through Yusif Yakubu, Nirmal Chetri and Sanju Pradhan while Harmanjot Khabra’s shot was saved by Lajong custodian Gumpe Rime. East Bengal dominated in the first session and created numerous openings. But the goal remained elusive as the Kolkata side struggled to find the touch inside the finishing zone. Breaking out of its usual formation in the tournament of employing a lone striker, East Bengal put extra men in the attack to assist its specialist marksman Ghanaian Yusif Yakubu.
