Bandh in coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema

N. Rahul

HYDERABAD: A bandh for the continuance of a united Andhra Pradesh affected life in 13 coastal and Rayalaseema districts on Monday. Shops and offices remained closed and State-owned buses were off the road.

Educational institutions, particularly schools, which are in the middle of half-yearly examinations, remained closed and Monday’s exam was postponed.

The bandh, spearheaded by a Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the Congress, the Telugu Desam Party and the Praja Rajyam Party, was largely peaceful, but some of their leaders were arrested at different places for enforcing the bandh.

TDP MLA K.E. Prabhakar and the party’s Kurnool district convener, Somisetty Venkateswarlu, were booked after the former and his supporters were involved in a scuffle with a police party when they tried to forcibly close shops in the town.

Praja Rajyam Party MLA V. Srinivasa Rao, the former Congress Minister, Mandali Budha Prasad, Mayor M. Ratna Bindu and the former Mayor, Mallika Begum, were among those picked up by the police in Vijayawada.

TDP MLA C. Ramesh, Mayor A. Veeraraghavamma and city Congress president K. Durgesh were arrested in Rajahmundry.

Offices of the BSNL, the District Cooperative Central Bank and Kapil Chit Funds in Nellore were damaged in stone-throwing. Stones were also hurled at the Mandal Revenue Office at Devarapalli in West Godavari district, resulting in a clash between the police and protesters. The incident was followed by a dharna in front of the local police station.
