Saranya suffers setback

CHENNAI: World under-14 bronze medallist and Asian under-14 girls champion J. Saranya (Velammal) suffered a setback when she lost to her elder sister J. Janani (Velammal) in the third round of the RAMCO-28th Rachel Paranjothy women’s chess tournament being organised by the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association here.

Five players, namely Janani, S. Harini of SRM University, A. Akshaya of Bloom Chess Academy, G. Apurva of Kanchi and G.K. Monnisha of Velammal School were in the lead with three points each.

B. Jeyassri of Amirtha Vidyalayam and G. Sushmitha of Jawahar Vidyalaya are in second spot with 2.5 points each.

J. Janani (3) bt J. Saranya (2); S. Harini (3) bt M. Mahalakshmi (2); A. Akshaya (3) bt N. Hemapriya (2); J.G. Nivedhitha (2) lost to G. Apurva (3); G.K. Monnisha (3) bt R. Abirami (2); R. Dharani Sree (2) lost to B. Jeyassri (2.5); G. Sushmitha (2.5) bt C.S. Kharunya (1.5) ; V. Harini (1) lost to V. Shvetha (2).
