Mandali honours Bhimsen Joshi

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Sree Ramaseva Mandali, Chamarajpet, has been one of the most important organisations on the cultural map of Bangalore. It has — for over six decades — been organising monthlong music concerts during the Ramanavami festival in April.

On a par with the Chennai Music festival, the Ramaseva Mandali’s sublime effort has brought some of the tallest musicians of both Carnatic and Hindustani music traditions to Bangalore.

In memory of its founder, the mandali has instituted an award and this year, the S.V. Narayana Swamy Memorial National Award for 2010 was given to celebrated vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi at his Pune residence on January 5.

S.N. Ramaprasad, managing trustee, Sree Ramaseva Mandali Trust, and A. Ravindra, vice-chairman, Ramaseva Mandali, were there to honour the maestro.
