GPS to monitor lorries laden with PDS items

KRISHNAGIRI: Lorries carrying ration items would soon be fitted with global positioning system (GPS) equipment to navigate their movement in Krishnagiri district.
This was announced at a meeting chaired by P. Prabhakar, District Revenue Officer at the Collectorate.
He said that the system to be introduced for the first time in the district on a pilot basis to check smuggling of essential commodities meant for public distribution system. Through the GPS navigation system, the movement of lorries with ration goods can be monitored from Chennai.
If the GPS equipment-fitted lorries deviate from their designated route, immediately the district officials would be alerted to take corrective measures, officials participated in the meeting said.
Senior officials of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation explained the GPS features through a power-point presentation to the officials at the meeting.
The meeting was attended by P. Rathinavelu, District Supply Officer and Revenue and Civil Supplies officials, says a release from the collectorate.
