12,000 completion certificates pending with varsity: V-C

Special Correspondent

Most certificates have not been sent owing to lapses in providing documents

CHENNAI: Nearly 12,000 certificates for completion of distance education programmes, some dating back to 2004, are pending with the University of Madras for various reasons, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said here on Thursday.

He said that most certificates had not been sent to the candidates because of lapses by the candidates in providing necessary documents.

“There was limited communication between the Controller of Examinations and the Distance Education Department leading to stagnation of certificates. Now we are writing to the candidates asking them to collect their certificates after furnishing the necessary missing documents,” he said. Prof. Thiruvasagam said that the process would be completed in the next couple of months.

He also provided details on the 152nd convocation of the University to be held on January 19. Over 42,900 candidates from various departments would be receiving their degrees at the function. V.C.Kulandaiswamy, chairman, Tamil Virtual University, would be the chief guest.

Prof. Thiruvasagam said that a drive would be conducted to create awareness of the book collection campaign on January 26 by students of the university. A target of 50 books per student had been set but it would not be mandatory for students to participate in the campaign, he said. The books would be collected by the university from the colleges in 10 days’ time and would be given to the Anna Centenary Library, he said.
