SHIMOGA: Bhoo-Vidyadana Shala Jameenu Geni Raithara Horata Samiti president Kallur Megharaj and its members, who were supposed to go on fast in front of the house of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in support of their demands, were held by the police on Friday and forcibly took them to the Kumsi Police Station, about 30 km from here. Mr. Megharaj said over telephone from Kumsi that all the activists had assembled at the KSTRC Bus Stand and were getting ready to proceed to Mr. Yeddyurappa’s house through a procession around 11 a.m. “Then, the police arrived there and arrested us and took to the police station at Kumsi,” he said. He said that recently he had urged Governor H.R. Bhardwaj to direct Mr. Yeddyurappa to amend the Land Reforms Act providing for the conferment of the ownership rights on the poor tenants engaged in the cultivation of the land donated to government schools. The pernicious system would be eradicated if the tenants were made owners of it. Mr. Megharaj urged the Chief Minister to order withdrawal of the obnoxious circular issued by the Education Secretary to fix the tenancy of the land donated to government schools through auction as it had proved to be unfair to tenants as the School Development and Monitoring Committees were taking advantage of this circular that sought to change the tenants through eviction eventually denying their rights over the land they were tilling as it broke their continuity of tenancy. He said that as many as 150 activists along with leaders Kadidal Shamanna, K.P. Sripal, G. Madappa, Manjula Devi and Suvarna Nagaraj of JD(S) were staying at the police station since noon on Friday. Mr. Megharaj said that he would urge the Chief Minister to convene a meeting within 15 days and direct the officers concerned to amend the rules and drop the auctioning of the agriculture land belonged to the government schools.
