Budget likely on February 26

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: In a break from tradition owing to unavoidable circumstances, the Union budget for 2010-11 is likely to be presented on February 26 instead of the conventional February 28.

Indicating this at a luncheon at his residence here on Saturday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told mediapersons that the advancement of the budget presentation is necessitated by the fact that while February 28 happens to be a Sunday this year, February 27 is also a government holiday on account of Prophet Mohammad’s birthday.

A final decision on the date is to be taken by the Cabinet soon.

This would be Mr. Mukherjee’s second budget presentation during the United Progressive Alliance government’s second term in office and comes within seven months of the first, which was presented in July 2009 after the Lok Sabha polls.

The economy, Mr. Mukherjee said, was well on the recovery path and there were good signals from various sectors. The budgetary process has already been initiated with the Minister holding consultations with various stakeholders for inputs from different sectors of the economy.

The crux of the budgetary exercise this year would be the timing of withdrawing the stimulus measures.
