Test drive to be made compulsory for licence
K. Balchand
NEW DELHI: No person will be able to obtain a driving licence without a test drive, as per a new law the Centre proposes to introduce while amending the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988.
The provision for exemption from test drive if the candidate has obtained a certificate from institutions recognised by the States will go.
The Centre has decided to make refresher courses mandatory for transport vehicle drivers for road safety.
The committee of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reviewing the Act, has agreed in principle to make it necessary for transport vehicle drivers to undergo a refresher course to update their knowledge about the recent developments in the field of safe and defensive driving.
These factors will be tested when drivers apply for renewal of licences every 3 years. Drivers have to practically demonstrate their suitability for driving transport vehicles.
The Centre is also set to regulate the business of body-building of different types of vehicles, particularly commercial vehicles. The proposed new law seeks to make it mandatory for the builders of bodies to notify registering authorities about details such as the number of chassis they received, the period during which they were in their custody for the purpose of body-building, the completion of the work and delivery of the motor vehicle to the owner.
