Factory authorities agree to develop area around lake


Karwar: Alarmed at the continuous death of the fishes in the Hullatti Lake in Haliyal reportedly owing to untreated effluents let out by a nearby sugar factory, the taluk administration held a meeting on Monday and instructed the factory to stop the contamination of water by releasing the effluents.

Assistant Commissioner M.R. Ravi held a meeting and the factory authorities agreed to stop releasing effluents into the lake and agreed to develop the area around the lake. The meeting was held after the death of fishes in the lake on January 10, the second time in a week, and the officials of different departments participated. A committee of environment, fisheries, agriculture, minor irrigation and the factory officials was constituted and members of non-governmental organizations were also included in the committee. The committee would hold a meeting every week and discuss about the renovation of lake and the surrounding areas, it was decided.

Mr. Ravi asked the officials to take immediate steps to clean the Hullatti Lake which was stinking owing to the fish kill.

He asked the factory authorities to stop releasing effluents into the different lakes. The authorities would supply oxygen to the fishes in the lake on Tuesday. And new fishes would be released into the lake. Mr. Ravi directed the factory management to comply with the decision of the committee before February 10.

Later, speaking to the presspersons, he said that mixing of effluents was the main reason for the death of the fishes.

He said steps would be taken to prevent such incidences in future.
