Renewal of licence for prayer hall opposed

Correspondent

Karwar: Activists of the Hindu Jagaran Vedike and the Halakki Vokkaliga Sangha met the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada on Monday and submitted a memorandum protesting against the reported letter written by the Deputy Commissioner to the Commissioner of Karwar City Municipal Council to renew the licence of the prayer hall of New Life Fellowship Organization (NLFO) Vokkalakeri in Binaga at Karwar.

The activists alleged that the activities of the New Life were leading to social unrest in Vokkalakeri. The NLFO had deliberately chosen the Hindu majority area to build the prayer hall, they alleged. The members said the CMC had rightly suspended the permission granted to the NLFO anticipating social unrest. But some persons from the Deputy Commissioner’s office intervened and ordered the Commissioner to grant permission, they alleged.

The Deputy Commissioner denied that he had asked the Commissioner to grant permission. He said he would cancel the licence if the people in area were against it.

Talking to presspersons, the Halakki Vokkaliga leaders said if the prayer continued in the area, it would lead to law and problems. B.S. Pai, Raja Gowda, Mohan Gowda and others were part of the delegation.
