Staff Reporter

HOSUR: A herd of 30 wild elephants destroyed crops near Denkanikottai area on Saturday night.

The herd entered Tamil Nadu through Jawalagiri from Karnataka Reserve Forest about a month ago.

The elephants entered the agriculture fields in Thavarakarai, Osatti, Kandaganapalli, Noganur, Sapranapalli, Santhanappali villages and damaged ragi, cabbage, banana and double beans cultivated on about 10 acres.

The villagers informed the Denkanikottai forest officials at Royakottai about the elephant movement. Denkanikotai Forest Ranger Ramachandran rushed to the spot to assess the damage.

The farmers said they lost lakhs of rupees as the herd destroyed tomato, double beans and cabbage crops that were ready for harvest.
