Bag laden with chemicals found near Howrah station

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: A school bag laden with some chemicals, suspected to be explosives, was found lying near Howrah railway station near here on Monday.

Some passers-by noticed the bag lying on a heap of sand near one of the station entrances in the afternoon and alerted the police.

“We found a can-like object inside, covered with black tape and containing a liquid substance. It appeared like a chemical bomb, and we informed the bomb disposal squad of the Government Railway Police,” Utpal Roy, officer in charge of the Golabari Police Station, told The Hindu.

The can was taken to the banks of the Hooghly where it was defused. “The liquid has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis,” Mr. Roy said.
