Collector B. Ramajaneyulu handing over a bouquet to L. Sesha Ratnam in Guntur on Monday.

GUNTUR: Just eight months after her birth, she had her legs impaired by polio. But L. Sesha Ratnam did not let her physical disability come in the way of her goal of completing higher education. What’s more, she also used her creative talents and has dabbled as an interior designer in Hyderabad.

Moved by her courage, Collector B. Ramajaneyulu has granted a financial assistance of Rs.10,000 and has assured her of further help. He also promised all help in securing for her a teacher job after her completion of B. Ed course in St. Joseph’s College of Education here. Born into an agricultural family at Vinukonda as the youngest of four siblings, Sesha Ratnam had a virulent polio attack when she was just eight months old. As she was growing up, she was determined to go to school and her parents got crutches. But since they were not very comfortable, she decided to leave them and walk with the support of her hands, bearing her entire weight. ``I just refused to give up. Initially it was painful to walk with the support of hands, but I got used to it,” she said after being complimented by the Collector on Monday.
