Over 3 lakh given government jobs in three years: Stalin

Special Correspondent

Hogenakkal project is expected to be completed in five phases

By March-end the preliminary work will be completed

CHENNAI: Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that over 3.44 lakh persons have been given government jobs in just over three years since the DMK came to power.

In his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, he said that between May 2006 and September 2009, more than 12,000 persons had been appointed as policemen; about 24,000 had been selected by the Public Service Commission while more than 1.15 lakh had been employed directly from the employment exchanges on seniority basis and over 1.8 lakh had been appointed on consolidated pay basis. Compassionate ground appointments numbered 9,146, he said.

Refuting the charge that the government was appointing retired staff and snatching away the chance of youth, he said that only in certain cases were retired staff re-employed.

He said that employment through the PSC was a process that took some time. In the interest of cutting down delay in ongoing projects, some officials and staff were re-employed till such time that new appointees – selected by the PSC – assumed charge.

“No one will be affected by the government order issued in this regard,” he said.

Replying to questions on the Hogenakkal combined drinking water scheme, he said that the project was expected to be completed in five phases.

Tenders were being evaluated now and by March-end all the preliminary work would be completed and field work would begin, he assured the House.

A time-table was drawn up earlier as per which the project would be completed by December 2012. He said that the government would take steps to complete the project early, just as it had completed the Ramanathapuram combined drinking water scheme ahead of schedule. “Just as you [G.K.Mani, PMK leader] have elections in mind, I also have [general] elections in mind when I say that the project will be completed ahead of schedule,” he said. Assembly elections are due in the State in May 2011.

Mr. Stalin said that the government had been delivering on all promises it had made to the people. On the distribution of colour televisions to people, he said that in the first three phases, over 62 lakh television sets had been distributed. In the fourth phase, the numbers procured were enhanced to 50 lakh after consultations in the committee constituted for the purpose.

He said that the government had invited the AIADMK to be part of the committee but they had declined and were now asking questions.
