Man crushed to death at ORR site

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Death came calling for a 23-year-old man, who used to operate a road roller, after Sunday midnight when he got crushed to death under its wheels in a freak accident at Vattinagulapally in Raidurg.

Neeraj Kumar from Bihar was working as road roller operator for the past 18 months at the construction site of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) project. The operators work in shifts. On Sunday night, Kumar’s colleague Yesu told him that he would take leave and requested the latter to continue the work.

Kumar, for some reason, left the roller’s key in the ignition keyhole and slept on the road behind the roller. Sometime after midnight, Yesu returned to work having decided not to avail leave. “Unaware that his colleague was sleeping behind the vehicle, he started the engine and reversed the roller crushing Kumar to death,” Raidurg Sub-Inspector G. Suresh told reporters. Yesu realised his mistake and scared of being arrested, fled the spot. A police team was sent to his village in Visakhapatnam to nab him.
