Chennai: Surya Shekhar Ganguly has put India in the lead against Israel in the eighth and penultimate round of the World Team chess championship at Bursa in Turkey on Tuesday. India is leading Israel 1-0 and in the three ongoing games, K. Sasikiran is level with Boris Gelfand on the top board and P. Harikrishna is a pawn down against Michael Roiz in the rook and minor pieces ending on the second board. On the fourth board, Arun Prasad is playing a rook ending against Rodshtein and has improved his position of making a draw. Ganguly put India ahead on the third board by defeating Evgeny Postny in 40 moves with the white pieces. In other matches, Armenia is well placed to defeat United States. Russia beat Egypt 2.5-0.5 with one game in progress. India and Azerbaijan are on nine points. India takes on Brazil in the final round. The results: Round eight: Armenia (8) playing USA (12) 1-1 with two games in progress; Azerbaijan (9) leading Greece (6) 2-0 with two games in progress; Turkey (3) trailing Brazil (2) 0.5-1.5 with two games in progress; India (9) leading Israel (7) (K. Sasikiran playing B. Gelfand; P. Harikrishna playing Michael Roiz; S.S. Ganguly bt Evgeny Postny; Arun Prasad playing Maxim Rodshtein) 1-0 with three games in progress; Russia (13) bt Egypt (3) 2.5-0.5 with one game in progress. Round seven: Russia (11) drew with Armenia (8) 2-2; Egypt (3) lost to India (9) (Adly Ahmed drew with K. Sasikiran; Amin Bassem drew with P. Harikrishna; Abdel Razik Khaled lost to G.N. Gopal; Sarwat Walsa drew with B. Adhiban) 1.5-2.5; Israel (7) lost to Turkey (3) 1.5-2.5.
