Students perform at the prelims of Milan ’10 in Chennai on Tuesday. — CHENNAI: The select teams who took part in the prelims of Milan’10, a national-level cultural fest of SRM University, had a striking commonness. They had made sure that a good number of full-fledged rehearsals with the accompanists were done before stepping on the stage. “Practice is the key to ensure a good on-stage performance,” said Unni Nair, one of the judges of the event, in which five of the 12 participating teams were selected for the finals. The finals will be conducted on the SRM University campus from January 27 to 29. Western Battle of Bands, one of the categories, had a good turnout with student bands from various city colleges belting out their compositions. Eastern Battle of Bands was predominantly film based, as students picked up popular Hindi songs from films such as Rang De Basanti and Slumdog Millionaire. Many teams faced elimination because of lack of coordination with accompanists. “Your voices are very good and well trained. But, most students make a mistake of not coordinating with accompanists at the last moment. That spoils the spirit of song,” said Rajiv Menon, chief executive officer of Amadeus Globus Studios. The selected teams will vie with competitors from other States in the finals.
