Scintillating show by Sonali

Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Peerless performance by hearing-impaired Odissi dancer Sonali Mohapatra made the second evening of the ongoing Mukteswar dance festival memorable.

Disciple of Akademi awardee Odissi Guru Durga Charan Ranbir and daughter of music composer Nirmal Mohapatra, young Sonali’s determination has helped her to win over her disability to emerge as a gifted dancer. Married to gifted flutist Abhiram Nanda, she has also established herself as one of the finest soloists among the dancers of her generation. Her presentation of Suryastaka and Mohane deli chhanhi exhibited her amazing grip over the pure and expressional aspects of dance respectively.

Cuttack-based Odissi dancer Meena Kumari Sahoo and New Delhi-based Ipsita Behoora performed in the duet dance segment of the festival. Their first presentation – Ganesh vandana - was an invocation to Lord Ganesh. It demonstrated 12 facets of the Lord who dances ‘Anand Tandav’, the dance of ecstasy. The duo later presented the dance of Lord Krishna in the expressional number – Nachanti range Srihari.

The concluding presentation of the evening was Odissi dance drama Nirvana (salvation) by the city-based Abarta troupe of Guru Naba Kishore Mishra. The production, choreographed by the Guru, was based on the life of Buddha that commenced with the birth of Buddha as Gautam and concluded with his self-realisation and salvation.

Eminent music composer Shantanu Mohapatra presented choral singing of Shiv vandana that marked the inauguration of the evening.
