Competitions mark ‘Samathuva Pongal’

Contests in Tirukkural held for students



Festival time: Students of National Child Labour Special School celebrating Samathuva Pongal in Mannachanallur near Tiruchi.Well done: A winner of the environmental competition receiving the prize at Lalgudi.

Tiruchi: Samathuva Pongal and Tamil New Year Day were celebrated with gaiety in all the child labour special schools in the district. Competitions were also conducted in Tirukkural recitation and oration for the students.

P. Manju Prakash, Project Director of National Child Labour Project, Tiruchi, told The Hindu on Saturday that nearly 1,050 child labourers with an equal number of boys and girls in the age group of 9 to 14 were now studying in 35 National Child Labour Special Schools in various parts of the district and pointed out that regular and vocational education was being provided to them through 38 academic and 38 vocational teachers.

She said that several competitions including sports events were being conducted in all child labour special schools to motivate and encourage the children studying in these schools.

She pointed out that instructions were given to all the child labour schools to conduct festivals and other celebrations.

Mupperum vizha

Mrs, Manju Prakash said that the students of the National Child Labour Special School at Mannachanallur actively took part in the Mupperum vizha of Samathuva Pongal vizha, Tamil New Year day celebrations and several students won prizes in the Tirukkural speech and recitation competitions.

S. Prabhu, Headmaster of the school, said that Mrs. Manju Prakash presided over the function and distributed prizes and certificates to the students.

Bhanumathi Kannan, president of Mannachanallur town panchayat, who was the chief guest at the function, distributed Samathuva Pongal and prizes to the students. She appreciated the talents of the students.

Sasikala, Sub Registrar, Mannachanallur, Manoharan, secretary, Lions Club of Mannachanallur, Setlla, project officer, Child Development Project, Mannachanallur and others spoke.
