Karwar: The Uttara Kannda district administration reopened the Kali river bridge connecting Karwar and Goa after it was found that the ongoing repair work cannot be completed in a month’s time. The bridge was closed on January 5 for the replacement of the bearings in the bridge. All the vehicles except two-wheelers were banned on the bridge during the repair work. The Mumbai-based company, which had taken up the repair work, had said the bridge would be repaired within a month. There are a total of eight bearings in the bridge. The district administration had it would take three days to replace each of the bearings. But when the work was taken up, it was found that the bearings were jammed and not a single bearing could be replaced. Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannda district, said that there is no reason to worry about the safety of the bridge as it is in good condition. There is a proposal to build a new bridge during the implementation of four-line project from Mangalore to Karwar on NH-17, he added.
